Why you should book your South Wales wedding photographer early (and what to look for!)

Planning your South Wales wedding is one of the most exciting times of your life, but with so many details to consider, one of the biggest (and most important) decisions you'll make is choosing the best welsh wedding photographer for you. As a wedding photographer in South Wales, I am already filling my 2026 diary—so if you’re engaged and planning your dream south Wales, or destination wedding, now is the time to book!

In this guide, we’ll explore why booking your photographer early is crucial, what to look for when choosing the right one, and how to secure the best possible coverage for your big day.

Why Booking Your South Wales Wedding Photographer Early is Essential

1. Top Photographers Get Booked Quickly

South Wales is home to some of the most stunning wedding venues, from the breathtaking St Tewdrics House to the charming Fairyhill or the luxury elegance of Cefn Tilla Court. The best wedding photographers who specialise in these venues often get booked one to two years in advance, especially for peak wedding season (May to September). If you have your heart set on a particular photographer, don’t wait! Get them on a call, and get them booked in.

2. More Time for Engagement Sessions & Planning

Booking early means you’ll have time to schedule an engagement session, which helps you get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. It also allows your photographer to get to know your style, preferences, and love story—ensuring your wedding images are everything you’ve dreamed of.

3. Secure the Best Photography Package for Your Budget

The earlier you book, the more flexible photographers are with packages, add-ons, and pricing. Many photographers offer payment plans that make investing in wedding photography more manageable, not to mention the fact that if you’re booking a year in advance, you’re likely going to get them at a lower price point.

4. Peace of Mind for Your Wedding Timeline

Once your photographer is booked, you can relax knowing a key part of your wedding is sorted. You’ll have time to discuss timelines, must-have shots, and any special moments you want captured.

What to Look for When Choosing Your South Wales Wedding Photographer

1. A Style That Matches Your Vision

Every photographer has a unique style, so it’s essential to find one whose work resonates with you. Ask yourself:

  • Do you prefer the staged, editorial style images, or natural, documentary-style photos?

  • Does the photographer capture candid moments beautifully?

  • Do their editing tones match the aesthetic of your wedding?

2. Experience in Your Venue or Similar Locations

A photographer with experience at your chosen venue will know the best lighting conditions, scenic backdrops, and hidden spots for the most stunning photos. Check their portfolio to see if they’ve shot at your venue before! BUT just remember that even if they haven't , a good photographer won’t need to have done this.

What I will say is that; if you’re getting married somewhere very dark… and the only images you’ve seen are that of really bright ceremonies, maybe ask if they’ve shot in difficult lighting situations before.

3. Strong Reviews & Testimonials

Past couples’ experiences say a lot about a photographer’s professionalism and reliability. Look for reviews that mention:

  • How comfortable the photographer made them feel

  • How well they captured key moments

  • How responsive and helpful they were throughout the process

4. A Connection & Good Communication

Your photographer will be with you for most of your wedding day, so it’s important to feel at ease with them. A great photographer should:

  • Make you feel comfortable and confident

  • Communicate clearly about packages, timelines, and expectations

  • Be excited about your wedding vision!

5. A Portfolio That Tells a Story

Your wedding gallery should feel like a beautifully told love story, not just a collection of posed shots. Look for photographers who:

  • Capture authentic, emotional moments

  • Tell a cohesive story from morning preparations to the dance floor

  • Include a mix of romantic couple portraits, candid guest interactions, and stunning venue details

When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer in South Wales?

If you’re getting married in 2026, the best time to book is now! (For reference, I’m writing this in April, 2025) Saturdays in peak season (May to September) go first, but even weekday weddings are becoming increasingly popular and book up quickly.

Here’s a rough timeline:

2 years before – Start researching photographers, making enquiries, and securing your venue. Arguably, not in that order… lol.

18 months before – Book your photographer to guarantee your date.

1 year before – Schedule a South Wales engagement shoot and start discussing your wedding timeline.

1 month before – Finalise shot lists and must-have moments with your photographer.
