Why destination-inspired weddings are influencing UK couples

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed a clear shift in what UK couples want from their wedding day. Less tradition for the sake of it, fewer rigid timelines - and more focus on atmosphere, experience, and how the day actually feels.

That shift is exactly why destination weddings are influencing UK couples more than ever.

You don’t have to get married abroad to take inspiration from destination weddings - but the mindset behind them is changing how weddings are planned at home.

What Is a Destination-Inspired Wedding?

A destination-inspired wedding isn’t about location alone. It’s about the approach, the timeline.. and the feeling.

It borrows elements from destination weddings and elopements, such as:

  • slower, more intentional timelines

  • fewer formalities, more experience

  • locations that do the work visually

  • fashion-led styling rather than theme-led décor

The result is a wedding that feels curated, calm, and personal - whether it’s in the UK countryside or the Austrian Alps.

The Austria Ski Elopement That Perfectly Captured This Shift

This ski elopement in Austria is a perfect example of what destination-inspired weddings do best.

Zara & Roy stripped everything back for this styled shoot. It was just me, and the couple - just the two of them, the mountains, and a day built around experience rather than expectation. The styling was minimal, the setting dramatic, and the energy was completely relaxed.

What stood out most wasn’t the location - it was how present everything felt. Nothing was rushed. Nothing was forced. And that’s exactly what UK couples are responding to this year!

Why UK Couples Are Taking Inspiration From Destination Weddings

Even when couples are marrying close to home, many are choosing to:

  • plan shorter, more focused days

  • prioritise atmosphere over tradition

  • choose venues with strong visual identity

  • invest in photography that tells a story, not just documents events

Destination weddings have shown couples what’s possible when you remove pressure - and that mindset translates beautifully into UK weddings.

How This Is Showing Up in UK Weddings Right Now

I see this influence clearly in UK weddings I photograph, especially those happening in spring and summer.

Couples are:

  • opting for outdoor or light-filled ceremonies

  • planning fewer formal moments, more natural flow

  • choosing fashion-forward outfits and understated styling

  • allowing time for quiet moments, not just busy schedules

These weddings still feel like weddings… couples just get to live in their day a bit better.

Destination-Inspired Doesn’t Mean “Not for the UK”

One of the biggest misconceptions is that destination-inspired weddings only work abroad. In reality, the UK is perfectly suited to this style - particularly for couples who want something elegant, relaxed, and modern.

Country estates, private houses, vineyard venues, and even city spaces can all lend themselves to this approach when the focus is on experience rather than tradition.

This is exactly the kind of wedding I’m photographing across the UK between now and the end of summer.

Planning Ahead: UK & Europe in 2027

Many destination couples also plan further ahead - particularly those considering travel or European weddings.

Alongside UK weddings, I’ll also be photographing in Europe, including a Wedding in Cyprus in March 2027. For couples planning destination or Europe-based weddings around that time, this opens up the opportunity to work together without the added pressure of finding someone unfamiliar with photographing weddings abroad. And, without the giant flight & accommodation cost!

If you’re planning a UK wedding for May 2027 and are drawn to destination-inspired styling and storytelling, booking early allows space to plan intentionally - without compromise.

Is a Destination-Inspired Wedding Right for You?

This approach suits couples who:

  • value atmosphere over tradition

  • prefer natural, documentary photography

  • want their day to feel calm and personal

  • aren’t interested in rigid timelines or staged moments

Whether you’re getting married in the UK, in Europe, or somewhere in between, the mindset stays the same.

Planning a Destination-Inspired Wedding?

If you’re planning a UK wedding this year, looking ahead to May 2027, or considering a destination or European celebration, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.

The next year is a bit of a wild one for me. I’ll be here in the UK until September 9th 2026, and then heading to Australia to photograph weddings along the east coast. THEN, I'll be capturing European weddings and elopements in March 2027, and back to the UK for the whole of May 2027. Then… hopefully back to Aus!

I photograph weddings and elopements in a natural, documentary style - influenced by destination work, but grounded in real moments and real connection.
