Getting Married at Short Notice? What Actually Matters for Your Wedding Photos
Planning a wedding in a matter of months rather than years? Here's why a shorter timeline doesn't mean compromising on beautiful, meaningful wedding photography.
There's this idea that planning a wedding needs to take years. That every little detail needs to be considered, every Pinterest board perfected, and every supplier booked well in advance.
But trust me! That’s old news. There’s a new trend with us youthful lot (anyone getting married now, not age related I promise xx)… and it’s, tying the knot as soon as you can!!
Whether you've decided to get married in six months, three months, or even sooner, a shorter planning timeline doesn't mean your wedding photographs have to feel like an afterthought.
As a wedding photographer, I believe the most important thing isn't how long you've spent planning your day. It's how that day actually feels.
And Julia & Charley's gorgeous wedding at Davenport House is a lovely reminder of exactly that.
A Beautifully Elegant Wedding at Davenport House
If you've been looking at wedding venues in Shropshire, you might already have come across Davenport House. It's one of my absolute favourite venues to photograph, and for good reason. People travel for this venue!! (including me)
There's something about the combination of its grand architecture, beautiful grounds and timeless interiors that makes it SUCH a dream for wedding photography.
Julia & Charley's wedding was everything I love about photographing weddings.
Elegant, effortlessly gorgeous, & full of personality.
Every detail looked incredible, but what I loved most was how laid-back the atmosphere felt throughout the day. Nothing felt overly staged or forced. It was simply two people celebrating their marriage, surrounded by the people they love.
And that's exactly the kind of wedding I adore documenting.
1. The Atmosphere Matters More Than the Timeline
When you're planning a wedding at short notice, it's easy to worry about everything you haven't had time to organise.
But here's something worth remembering: your wedding photographs won't show how many months you spent planning.
They'll show the way you looked at each other during your ceremony. Your friends laughing over drinks. The hugs, the happy tears, the little moments you didn't even realise were happening.
Of course, beautiful styling and thoughtful details are lovely (and I absolutely love photographing them). But they're only one part of the story.
What makes a wedding gallery truly special is the feeling behind it.
Julia & Charley's day was a perfect example of how elegance and a relaxed atmosphere can go hand in hand.
2. You Don't Need Hours of Posed Wedding Photographs
One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding photography is that you need to spend hours away from your guests to get beautiful portraits.
You really don't. Or at least… I don’t need that much time to get them!!!
My approach to wedding photography is a blend of documentary storytelling and editorial portraits.
That means I'll spend most of your day capturing everything naturally as it unfolds, stepping in with a little gentle direction when it's time for those gorgeous, considered portraits.
For most weddings, around 15–20 minutes of couple portraits can be enough to create something really special, depending on the venue, light and what you'd like from your photographs.
A venue like Davenport House gives us such a beautiful backdrop to work with, too. You don't need to travel miles or turn your wedding into a full-blown photoshoot.
You get the photographs you've been dreaming of, without missing the celebration you've spent so much time looking forward to.
3. Prioritise the Things You'll Actually Remember
If you're getting married at short notice, my biggest piece of advice would be to focus on what genuinely matters to you both.
Not what social media says you should have. Not what somebody else's wedding looked like. And definitely not what you feel you're supposed to do.
Think about the moments you want to remember in ten, twenty or fifty years. What you’ll both want to be looking at in your wedding album with piccies from me.
Maybe that's having a beautiful ceremony surrounded by your favourite people. Maybe it's a long, relaxed drinks reception in the sunshine. Or maybe it's getting everyone together for one enormous party.
Whatever your priorities are, make room for them.
From a photography perspective, I'd always recommend allowing enough time to enjoy the day without constantly checking the clock.

4. Choose a Wedding Photographer Whose Style You Already Love
When you're booking wedding suppliers on a shorter timeline, it can be tempting to focus entirely on who's available.
But your wedding photographer is one supplier I'd encourage you to choose carefully.
Your photographs are one of the few things you'll have to look back on long after the day itself.
Look for someone whose galleries make you feel something. Someone who captures the kind of moments you want to remember, and whose approach fits how you want your wedding day to feel.
If you love natural, candid storytelling but also want those beautifully composed, editorial-style portraits, that's exactly where my approach sits.
I want you to look back at your gallery and remember not just what your wedding looked like, but what it felt like to be there.
If all you can remember is some photographer shouting demands at you… then you’ve done it wrong.
Most importantly, I want you to feel completely comfortable being yourselves in front of my camera.
5. A Shorter Engagement Doesn't Mean Compromising on Your Wedding Photography
Perhaps you've found your dream venue with a last-minute date available. Maybe you've decided you simply don't want to wait another two years to get married.
Whatever your reason for planning a wedding sooner rather than later, don't assume your favourite suppliers will automatically be unavailable. Like I said earlier, THE TRENDS ARE CHANING!! Us suppliers have more availability than we care to admit.
It's always worth asking.
I photograph weddings across Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, South Wales and further afield, and I'm currently taking bookings for 2027, 2028 and 2029.
If you're planning something at short notice, I'd still love to hear from you. Depending on the date, I may have availability, and we can chat about what you're planning.
Because your wedding doesn't need a two-year planning process to be something incredible.
It just needs to feel like you.
