10 Essential Questions to Ask Your South Wales Wedding Photographer Before Booking
With so many talented wedding photographers in South Wales, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when searching for “the one” who truly aligns with your vision. The variety of togs in the South Wales area is a huge advantage—you’re sure to find the perfect match—but it definitely also makes narrowing down options challenging.
Choosing the right photographer is one of the most lasting investments for your wedding day. When you look back years from now, those images should bring the memories alive, not bring regrets. Asking the right questions can be a game-changer, helping you understand each photographer’s approach, style, and experience, and ensuring you make the best choice.
Here are some of the most important questions you can ask before you book any photographer! (And, i’ll even answer them for you as well)
Question One: How would you describe your Photography Style?
This may come across as a strange question to ask a photographer, because, naturally you will have already seen their work, and you’ll have made your own perceptions of what their style is all about - but you’ll want to know that your perception aligns with what they’re trying to portray!
My answer;
My photography style at Honey & Heather combines a modern, chic approach with a natural, documentary feel. I focus on capturing candid, emotive moments, favouring soft lighting and warm tones that emphasise authenticity and romance. This style allows my couples to feel both comfortable and celebrated, while creating a timeless collection of images that feel intimate and genuine.
Question Two: Can I See some Full Galleries from Real, Recent, Weddings?
This is a very important question to ask. It’s amazing going through and seeing perfectly curated portfolios from various photographers, but that’s not an accurate representation of what you’ll receive in your final gallery. So, ensure that you ask to see 3-5 recent galleries from each photographer, so you really get to see what your gallery will look like!
My answer;
You can see some of mine HERE. But, feel free to ask for more <3
Question Three: How do you approach Formal Group Shots?
You’ve been to weddings. I know you have! And, what was your least favourite part? Waiting whilst the Couple were having their formal pictures taken. It drags, even when you’re actually in some of the photos.
Some Couples will want a photographer who carefully puts together each of the 10 group shots, taking at least 5 minutes with each photo. And some, want it IN AND OUT. They want it quick, they want it funny, they want it as natural as can be.
So, make sure you find someone who does it the way you like it!
My answer;
Have you guessed? I do it the fun way ;)
I actually really love the way I do group shots. I basically just get everybody into a little formation and make them all laugh at each other… It feels slightly manic. But, it looks great! I also tell very un-funny jokes, and somehow people laugh at them.
Question Four: What’s your process for post-editing, and how long does your editing take?
Another important question. You don’t want a nasty shock when you read your contract and it’s a 16 week wait for your final images! It’s so important to set a realistic expectation for yourself.
My answer;
The day after your wedding, you’ll receive 10-20 previews from me. Your final gallery will be ready then in 4-8 weeks, depending on the season!
Question Five: What happens in bad weather?
It’s a great idea to ensure your photographer has equipment that can work in any weather! Living in South Wales, I assume they will, though…
My answer;
I love embracing the weather! Some of my very favourite photos that I’ve taken have been in the pouring rain.
Question Six: Do you have a backup in case you get sick?
We all get sick, and we all have emergencies happen, no matter what your job- photographers are no different! It’s important that your chosen photographer has a contingency plan for this.
My answer;
I’m a part of a big group of South Wales photographers who all work a similar way, and who are always on call to take over if that needs to happen.
Question Seven: Can you accommodate specific photo requests?
Some photographers may have a strict list of photos that they take at every wedding, others are a bit go-with-the-flow, it really depends on the Tog. It’s a great idea to ask this question, to gauge how they respond to it!
My answer;
Of course!! After you book with me, I send across a questionnaire which has a whole bunch of questions on it, as well as a section for you to write any specific shot requests, and another section for you to pop any Inspo pics on from Pinterest or TikTok or instagram!
Question Eight: Are you Insured?
This is insanely important guys!!! Most venues will actually require the photographers public liability. So just make sure they have that readily available.
My answer;
Myself, and any second shooters I use, are all fully insured, and happy to hand over any documents to Venues.
Question Nine: How will you ensure the safety of our images?
This may seem like an odd question, but card corruption, and hard drive corruption can really happen. So, knowing how your photographer is going to protect your files from this happening is a good idea. I will say though, it’s never 100% that this isn’t going to happen- however, it is unlikely if they’re taking good precautions.
My answer;
I shoot with a dual-slot camera, which means that each image I take gets put onto two different SD Cards. I also backup every image to Two different hard drives. So, i’m really protecting those files!
Question Ten: We don’t want our images used online. Is this an issue?
You privacy could be a serious issue to you, and if this is the case, you’re not going to want to your images being used on a photographers website or social media. Just ask, to make sure they can support this decision.
My answer;
I’m always happy to privatise your wedding photos. On my questionnaire, there’s actually a section to ‘opt in’ to me sharing your images - which I do love doing! But, I would never ever have an issue if you didn’t want me to do this.
I hope this was super helpful for you! If you’re curious about anything else, or if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me!
